David Tomàs-Realp

David Tomàs Realp is one of the most internationally

renowned bassoon interprets and pedagogs of his generation.

Born in Barcelona, studied at the city’s conservatory and later

in Switzerland and Germany under Sergio Azzolini. He has been

the solo bassoon with the Gustav-Mahler Jugendorchester conducted

by Claudio Abbado and Riccardo Chailly. In the chamber music

realm, he has played with musicians such as Klaus Thunemann,

Dag Jensen and Radovan Vlatkovic. His recording with the

Bläsersolisten der Deutschen Kammerphilarmonie won the 1998

Echo-Klassik award for best CD in Germany.

He has been the first bassoon of the Spanish Radio Orchestra in Madrid and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León. As the principal bassoon with the Deutsche Kammerphilarmonie Bremen, he has worked with musicians such as Heinz Holliger, András Schiff, Frans Brüggen and Gidon Kremer, with who he has performed in the world’s leading concert halls. As a soloist he has performed with German and Spanish orchestras conducted by Robert King and Sir Neville Marriner. With Sir Neville Marriner and the Orquestra de Cadaqués, he recorded the Mozart Bassoon Concerto and the Sinfonia Concertante in 2003 and 2004. David Tomas has been invited as leading bassoon in several orchestras like Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, NDR Orchestra Hannover, ...

He has taught at the Hochschule für Künste of Bremen, at the Conservatorio Superior of Salamanca and at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, in Barcelona. Since 1999 he has held the bassoon chair at both the Folkwang Hochschule of Music in Essen (Germany) and the High Center of Music of the Basque Country (Spain), and in 2012 David Tomas was named Professor for Bassoon at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. He is also guest professor and player in international festivals like Oaxaca (Mexico), Rio de Janeiro (Brasil) and Krakow (Poland).

In 2002 and 2009 he was invited to be a member of the jury for the ARD International Bassoon Competition in Munich.
